Real Wood Doors Fit Rustic, Lodge and Historic Mountain Homes

Nothing else looks, feels or ages like real wood. A custom wood door is built from the same species as the home’s timbers and siding, so it reads as part of the architecture instead of a product attached to it.

Mountain lodge and rustic timber homes. Cedar, fir and reclaimed boards match exposed beams, log accents and board-and-batten siding.

Historic Old Town Park City. Design review in the historic district favors real materials. A stile-and-rail wood door passes where a steel door is questioned.

Modern homes with warm materials. Flush plank doors in clear cedar, mahogany or walnut pair with stone, steel and glass on mountain-modern elevations.

Owners who want one of a kind. Every custom wood door is built to the drawing. Species, plank width, stain, window layout and hardware are all yours to choose.

Owners who will maintain it. Real wood needs recoating. If nobody is around to do that, we will point you to a composite door instead.

Built for the Wasatch Front

Real wood can last decades at 7,000 feet. It just has to be the right species, built the right way, and finished on a schedule. We are honest about that up front.

Species choice. Western red cedar, redwood and mahogany resist rot and insects naturally. Fir and hemlock are fine paint-grade choices. We steer away from soft or open-grain species on sun-facing doors.

Dry air and UV. Mountain air pulls moisture out of wood and strong sun breaks down finish. A factory-applied stain with an exterior-grade UV topcoat slows both. Plan to recoat sun-facing doors every two to four years.

Snow and meltwater. Water at the bottom section is what rots a door. We specify a drip cap over the overlays, a sealed bottom rail, and a bottom seal that stays flexible in cold.

Temperature swing. A 30-degree daily swing makes wood move. Multi-layer construction with a plywood core and solid frame stays flat where a plank-only door would cup.

Weight. A custom wood door can weigh 400 to 600 pounds. We size springs, track and openers for it and recommend a wall-mount or heavy-duty belt opener.

Design Options

These are starting points. If the look you want is not here, bring a sketch or a photo and we will draw it.

Style. Flush horizontal or vertical plank for modern homes. Stile-and-rail raised panel for traditional. Carriage house with crossbucks and overlays for lodge and farmhouse. Arched or eyebrow top sections for stone openings.

Species. Clear or knotty cedar, redwood, Douglas fir, hemlock, mahogany, walnut, white oak, ipe, or reclaimed barn wood.

Finish. Natural, light, medium, dark or weathered stains. Custom match to your timbers, siding or front door. Paint in any color, or primed for your painter.

Windows. Clear, seeded, obscure or insulated glass in arched, square or custom mullion patterns. Larger openings on three-panel section layouts.

Hardware. Strap hinges, handles, clavos and ring pulls in black iron or hand-forged finishes. Or hidden hardware for a clean plank door.

Openers. Wall-mount or heavy-duty belt openers sized for the weight, battery backup, and smart controls for second-home owners.

Brands We Install, and When We Build Custom Instead

Monarch is not tied to one factory. We carry seven manufacturers, so the right wood door is never limited to a single catalog.

Stock and semi-custom. Clopay Reserve Wood Semi-Custom and Limited Edition, Ranch House Doors Shores Collection and rail-and-stile lines, Carriage House Doors standard designs. If one of these already does what you want, we install that. It is faster and costs less.

Fully custom. Most wood doors we sell in Park City and Heber go this route. We take the architect’s drawing, choose the species and construction, and have Ranch House Doors or Carriage House Doors build it to spec. Reclaimed boards, matched siding patterns, oversized openings and arched tops are all standard requests.

How We Build a Wood Garage Door

Custom does not mean vague. These are the options we draw from on every wood door. Anything outside this list, we design and have built by one of our manufacturing partners.

ConstructionHandcrafted 4- or 5-layer: plywood backer, solid wood frame with stiles every 24 in., insulation, plywood face, applied wood overlay or planks. Semi-custom 2-layer stile-and-rail doors available. Mortise-and-tenon joinery on custom lines.
SpeciesWestern red cedar, redwood, Douglas fir, hemlock, mahogany, meranti, walnut, white oak, ipe, reclaimed barn wood; nearly any species on fully custom builds
Door thickness1 5/8 in. to 2 in. and heavier on custom overlay designs
InsulationPolystyrene core, R-4.75 to R-5.9 on insulated models; non-insulated semi-custom doors available. Wood itself adds thermal mass but a wood door will not match a polyurethane steel door for R-value.
StylesStile-and-rail raised or recessed panel, carriage house with overlays and crossbucks, flush plank (horizontal or vertical), modern with aluminum and wood combinations, arched and eyebrow tops
FinishFactory stain in seven or more standard tones, custom stain match, factory paint, or primed for field finishing; exterior-grade topcoat recommended at altitude
WindowsClear, obscure, seeded or insulated glass; three-panel section layouts allow larger window openings; arched, square and custom mullion patterns
Weather protectionOne-piece drip cap over grooved overlays; vinyl bottom seal in an aluminum retainer; galvanized fasteners
HardwareHeavy-duty track, rollers and torsion springs sized for the door weight; decorative strap hinges, handles and clavos in black or iron; spade lift handles standard
Lead timeSemi-custom 6 to 10 weeks; fully custom longer depending on species and design
MaintenanceInspect finish yearly; recoat sun-facing doors every 2 to 4 years, shaded doors less often
WarrantyDepends on the manufacturer. Wood construction warranties are typically 1 to 5 years, stain 2 years, windows up to 10 years. Shorter than steel because wood is a natural material.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a wood garage door cost?+

Price depends on the species, the construction (semi-custom stile-and-rail or fully custom multi-layer), the finish, windows, hardware and size. Real wood is the most expensive door material we install, and the finish needs recoating over its life. We give a firm price after the site visit, with no obligation.

Are wood garage doors a good idea in snow?+

Yes, when built for it. Rot-resistant species, a drip cap over the overlays, a sealed bottom rail and an exterior-grade finish keep meltwater out. Doors built that way last decades in Park City. A cheap wood door without those details will not.

How often does a wood garage door need refinishing?+

Inspect the finish every year. Sun-facing doors at altitude need a recoat every two to four years; shaded doors go longer. Catching it early means a light recoat instead of stripping and refinishing.

Is cedar the best wood for a garage door?+

Western red cedar is the most common choice in the mountains. It resists rot and insects, stays stable through temperature swings, and takes stain well. Redwood and mahogany perform similarly. Fir and hemlock are good paint-grade options.

Can a wood garage door look modern?+

Yes. Flush horizontal plank doors in clear cedar, mahogany or walnut, with no visible rails or stiles, are the most requested wood door on mountain-modern homes. Aluminum-and-wood combinations are also available.

Can I add windows to a wood garage door?+

Yes. Three-panel section layouts allow larger window openings than steel doors. Clear, seeded, obscure or insulated glass in arched, square or custom mullion patterns.

How much does a wood garage door weigh?+

A two-car custom wood door typically weighs 400 to 600 pounds, two to three times a steel door. That is why we size springs, track and openers for each door rather than using a stock kit.

Can you replace or repair wood garage door panels?+

Often, yes. Individual sections can be rebuilt or replaced and stain-matched. If the door is older or the damage is widespread, we will tell you when replacement makes more sense. We service wood doors across Park City, Heber and Salt Lake.
