Steel Doors Fit Modern and Mountain Homes

Steel is the workhorse of custom garage doors. A three-layer insulated steel door gives the highest R-value of any material, the best dent resistance, and a face that can be flush, grooved, planked or finished to look like stained wood.

Mountain modern and transitional homes. Flush and V-groove steel panels in black, bronze or charcoal match steel siding, window frames and roofing without competing with them.

Owners who want the wood look without the upkeep. Factory wood-grain finishes in oak, walnut, mahogany and cedar tones read as stained wood from the street and never need refinishing.

Heated garages, workshops and gyms. Insulated steel holds the temperature in a space you use every day and cuts opener noise on garages under bedrooms.

Doors that take abuse. Ski gear, snow blowers, bikes and basketballs hit a garage door. Heavy-gauge steel over a foam core shrugs that off.

Built for the Wasatch Back

A steel door at 7,000 feet has to hold heat through sub-zero nights, shed snow off the roof above it, and survive a daily freeze-thaw cycle for six months a year. Three-layer polyurethane doors are built for exactly that.

Polyurethane core. Foam injected between two steel skins fills every cavity and bonds to the steel. R-16 to R-19 keeps a heated garage warm and stops the door from radiating cold into rooms above it.

Thermal break and sealed joints. Tongue-and-groove section joints and wrap-around steel end caps stop air leaks at the seams, which is where most heat loss happens on a cheaper door.

Galvanized and layered paint. Hot-dipped galvanizing under a baked-on primer and topcoat resists rust from road salt, snowmelt and the slush that collects at the bottom section.

Dent resistance. A foam-bonded sandwich panel is far stiffer than a single steel skin. It takes a hit from a snow blower chute or a ski boot and springs back.

Heavy hardware. Insulated steel is heavier than a hollow door. We size springs, track and openers for the weight so the door runs smoothly in cold temperatures year after year.

Design Options

These are starting points. If the look you want is not here, bring a sketch or a photo and we will draw it.

Panel style. Flush for a seamless modern face. Grooved or V-groove for subtle horizontal lines. Plank or ribbed for a cladding look. Short or long recessed panels for traditional homes. Carriage house overlays for a swing-door look.

Finish. Smooth matte, stucco or wood-grain texture. Standard colors in white, almond, sandtone, bronze, charcoal and black. Factory wood-look finishes in oak, walnut, mahogany and cedar. Custom color match to any Sherwin-Williams color.

Windows. Contemporary slim lites, square lites, full-width top sections, or a column of windows down one side. Clear, frosted, obscure or tinted glass, insulated on request.

Hardware. Black or stainless handles and hinges for carriage house designs. Hidden hardware for flush modern doors.

Openers. Belt-drive or wall-mount openers for quiet operation, battery backup, and smart controls so you can check the door from anywhere.

Brands We Install, and When We Build Custom Instead

Monarch is not tied to one factory. We carry seven manufacturers, so the right steel door is never limited to a single catalog.

Stock and semi-custom. Clopay Modern Steel and Gallery, Wayne Dalton Classic Steel 8300 and 8500, Amarr Olympus and Heritage, Martin Pinnacle and Athena, Northwest Door Modern Tech and Therma Tech. If one of these already does what you want, we install that. It is faster and costs less.

Fully custom. If no door on the market matches the drawing, we design the panel layout, window placement and finish and have it built to spec by one of our manufacturing partners. Oversized openings, hidden seams, exact siding matches and non-standard heights all go this route.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a steel garage door cost?+

Price depends on the construction (single, double or three-layer), the insulation, the panel style, windows, finish and size. A three-layer insulated door with a custom finish costs more than a single-layer flush door. We give a firm price after the site visit, with no obligation.

What is an insulated steel garage door?+

A door with a foam core between two steel skins. Polyurethane cores reach R-16 to R-19; polystyrene cores run R-6 to R-9. For Park City and Heber we recommend polyurethane.

What does steel-back mean?+

A steel-back door has a steel skin on the inside as well as the outside, with insulation in between. It is stronger, quieter and better insulated than a door with a vinyl or exposed-foam back, and it gives the garage a finished interior wall.

What gauge steel should I get?+

24 gauge is the heaviest exterior skin available for residential doors and the most dent-resistant. 25 to 27 gauge is standard on many insulated lines and performs well because the foam core carries most of the stiffness.

Will a steel garage door dent?+

A single-layer door can. A three-layer foam-bonded door is far stiffer and resists dents from everyday impacts. For doors that take real abuse, we specify 24-gauge skins.

Steel or aluminum?+

Steel is stronger, better insulated and holds a wood-grain or flush finish. Aluminum is lighter, will not rust, and is the frame material for full-view glass doors. For a solid door in the mountains, steel wins on insulation and dent resistance.

What is a flush steel garage door?+

A door with no raised panels or grooves, just a smooth face. It is the cleanest modern look and pairs with slim windows or no windows at all. Grooved, plank and recessed-panel styles are the alternatives.

Can I add windows to a steel garage door?+

Yes. Each line offers 20 to 40 window layouts, from slim contemporary lites to a full-glass top section or a column down one side. Clear, frosted, obscure or tinted glass, insulated on request.

Can I get a black steel garage door?+

Yes. Black is a standard finish on most modern steel lines. On south- and west-facing doors we recommend an insulated three-layer door, since dark colors absorb heat.

Do you install steel garage doors in Park City and Heber?+

Yes. Our own crew installs across Summit, Wasatch and Salt Lake counties, and our technicians service what we install.
